The Captains

Although wet under-foot we had a fortunate break in the weather to allow the first Ryder Cup-Cup to take place. After a toss of the coin it was decided that Rob's Team would play the part of the USA and Mark's team playing for the pride of Europe.

As is customary Rob & Mark had declared their pairings the day before and it was left until the morning of the match to announce the respective team orders, which threw up the following matches:

  Europe   USA
08:30 Peter & Paul vs. Lewis & Steve
08:40 Wally & Mark vs. Dave & Jack
08:50 Ian & Neville vs. Rob & Roger

The front nine holes were to be played as foursomes as one match, then the back nine holes as four-ball matches. This meant that there were a total of 6 points available; the victor reaching 3½ points or more.

  Europe   USA
Peter & Paul vs. Lewis & Steve won 2&1
won 2&1 Wally & Mark vs. Dave & Jack
won 1 up Ian & Neville vs. Rob & Roger

So, after the foursomes Europe were in the driving seat, winning 2-1.

  Europe   USA
Peter & Paul vs. Lewis & Steve won 3&2
won 3&2 Wally & Mark vs. Dave & Jack
Ian & Neville vs. Rob & Roger won 3&2

But the USA battled well on the back nine to make up the deficit to draw the match score 3-3.

As this was the first Ryder Cup-Cup there had to be a tie-break, which was to add the winning score together (i.e. winning 2&1 meant 2+1=3). So, USA won the Ryder Cup-Cup on the tie-break 13 to 9.

In case anyone is interested, the other Europe team won the other cup 14½ to 13½.
